Description

Since the introduction of the Massoth sound decoder family over 12 years ago, Massoth sound decoders have been among the most popular sound decoders on the market. To this day, XLS & Co. have been further developed and services offered. Nevertheless, the technology continues to develop and not all desired functions can be realized with the previous sound decoder family. Especially the desire for more sound memory could not be satisfied so far, because with the previous technology 175 seconds was the maximum storage time for audio sequences. This limited both the scope and the quality of the sound. But in the last few years a lot has changed in memory technology. This finally makes it possible to store large amounts of data in sound decoders. For this reason, Massoth decided to develop a completely new decoder architecture over a year ago.

In 2019 Massoth will introduce the XLSC decoder generation “Chicago” and thus lay the foundation for the next sound decoder years. A new technology standard! Thanks to the further development of processor technology, more data can now be processed at the same time and the sound quality significantly improved, so that today the sound spectrum of the new XLSC sound decoder generation is in no way inferior to modern audio reproduction and four times as good as that of the XLS. Not only the bit resolution is decisive for the quality of the sounds. Especially the reproduction frequency is characteristic for the perceived quality of the sound reproduction, because a higher reproduction frequency enables smaller wavelengths and therefore better highs.

The new sound decoder generation is not only at the forefront of sound quality, but also offers extraordinary functions that no decoder on the market supports. The XLSC is the first sound decoder to offer independent driving and sound functions with 22-32KHz audio reproduction, 10 true sound output channels and true dual amping (2 x 3 Watt Class-D power amplifier). The whole thing is even so flexible that for each sound it can be individually set on which audio channel the sound should be output (A,B or A+B). This allows real stereo effects in multiple combinations. What do you need a second amplifier for? Several scenarios are conceivable here: A whistle at the front of the steam locomotive, time-delayed and locally separated engine start for a twin-engine locomotive, or diesel locomotive combinations with an A+B unit, etc. To enhance the sound quality even further, DAC playback channels provide extra clear sound and 256 Megabit memory capacity provide up to 24 minutes of playback time. Each individual noise sequence can be adjusted in its volume in 8 fine steps, the total volume standardized over 100 steps, the whole without loss of quality!

At the same time, the locomotive decoder has also been newly developed and offers 3rd generation load control for slow crawl speeds and rapid braking and acceleration. The latest functional mapping (based on the PluG generation) ensures simple logic and is therefore the most modern and easiest to use mapping on the market. Here, too, 128 function addresses are fully supported (32 DCC commands and 96 binary state commands). With a maximum motor current of 6 amperes (continuous load 4 amperes), all single and twin motor locomotives can be equipped with sufficient power. In addition to the classic SUSI interface with the latest BIDI support, the XLSC offers the new powerSUSI functionality ex works.

In order to make the entire decoder concept as convenient and service-friendly as possible, the XLSC is designed in the form of a new interface. As the name suggests, the newly developed M30P interface has 30 contacts and is optimally tailored to garden railway requirements. The interface board has 18 screw terminals, various connection sockets and a few solder contacts for a total of 12 function outputs, loudspeakers A and B, clock generator, reed contacts, potentiometer, SUSI, powerSUSI, PZB/IR-Led (hardware already integrated), servos (can be operated up to 500mA without auxiliary voltage). The whole system is incredibly compact. With only 60x25mm, the interface and decoder with a total height of only 22mm also fit into smaller locomotive models. And should the decoder actually have to be removed for programming purposes at the dealer or have to be sent to the manufacturer for service reasons, it can easily be removed from the interface without having to touch the cabling of the locomotive. In the series, the interface board has the labelled side tabs which is very helpful for installation.

The sound projects available for delivery and planned for the future will be completed shortly.
